The Penang Trishaw Entourage kicks-off on 19 June at East Point City Mall where it was exhibited till 21 June 2015. Hong Kong is the first city of its regional road show among four others such as Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok and Taipei. A total of 5 Penang Trishaws and a ‘mini Penang city’ will be showcased in the next couple of months at the respective cities. It is aimed to engage the locals at each city to see, try, experience and taste a little bit of what Penang has right at their home grounds.
The Penang trishaws are especially brought in to enable visitors to have an opportunity to ride the trishaws themselves. To add to the excitement, while enjoying a stroll in ‘scenic George Town’, one can also snap photos and join in a contest called ‘Ride, Snap & Win’. The contest will be via Facebook where two winners (from each city) will be determined with the most number of votes. Each winner at all 5 cities will win return air-tickets for two persons to Penang with a 4-nights hotel-stay.
There are also other activities added to enhance ones’ Penang experience at the promotion –take a cool selfie with the 2D replica of the famous Penang street art, try Penang’s sweet & savoury snack, the tau sar pneahand witness the colourful Nyonya bead work demonstration. Also, there are travel agent counters open throughout the road show where one can book value added tour packages to Penang.
The 5 Penang trishaws are fully handmade. It took two months to fully build and assemble them. Decadesbefore the arrival of comfortable taxis and public buses, thousands of trishaws shaped Penang’s transportation system since the 1950s. Presently, the numbers have dwindled to 200 trishaws in George Town alone and it is now part of the city’s living heritage.
