Dragon boating has been around in Penang since the 1950s and it is part of Penang’s heritage. Penang has more than 30 years of experience in organizing dragon boat races benefitted from the technical expertise of a large number of experienced IDBF Technical Officials. The 36th Penang International Dragon Boat Festival 2015 will comply with the PIDBF Competition Regulations and if any rules not spelt out, it will be determined by theInternational Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) Competition Regulations & Rules of Racing.
This event is fully supported by the Penang State Government and is an affiliated festival of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF). A total of 12 local teams and 5 international teams from Australia, United Arab Emirates, China, Hong Kong and Brunei will be participating this year. Besides that, and not forgetting various teams from other states of Malaysia.
The Competition Divisions, Racing and Competition Classes that will be contested are listed below:
1) Malaysia Premier Open (22 Racers) ~ *for Malaysian crews only
2) International Premier Open (22 Racers)
3) International Premier Mixed (22 Racers)
4) International Premier Women (12 Racers)
5) International Senior 40 Open (12 Racers)
6) International Senior 40 Mixed (12 Racers)
7) International Junior U23 Open (12 Racers)
There will be two distance category for the competition which consists of 100 and 250 meters straight course. In addition, trophies and medals will be awarded to the top 3 winners. Every participating team will receive a souvenir for remembrance at the Opening Ceremony.
In a nutshell, the sports promote discipline, teamwork and perseverance. Get ready to experience the exciting and exhilarating cultural dragon boat races during the 36thPenang International Dragon Boat Festival at the scenic Teluk Bahang Dam on 30 and 31 May 2015. Members of the public are welcome to watch the race. Food stalls serving local delicacies will be available on the event day.
